Newsline – July 2010

Boule with Forest Row Twinning
The Boules evening was a cold one, but 12 members enjoyed the games – our turn next!

Stadtkapelle Mindelheim
Our invitation has been accepted by the Stadtkapelle to come 2nd June 2011, and so we will be looking for lots of hosts! We are planning a joint concert with the East Grinstead ConChord Band and also a Beerfest. Further news to come.

The East Grinstead Guide Association
Twinning made a donation for their centenary celebrations towards a marker in their Trail around East Court. Joan Roberts has offered to take us around the Trail on Friday, 6th August commencing 7 p.m.    We are planning to make this a Cheese & Wine party for refreshments al fresco after the walk and all members are invited to come. Tickets £3. Please fill in the form if coming as we have to buy refreshments.

Christmas outing
We are thinking up ideas for our Christmas outing and suggestions have been made for a concert in London or elsewhere, or a visit to a Christmas market (in Bruges, Aachen, France, or Portsmouth). Can we have your comments on this. It is always difficult to please everyone but we like to have a general consensus of opinion.

Quiz night
The Quiz night has been cancelled for September and will now take place in February.

Hog Roast
The Hog Roast seemed to be very successful. It would have helped if members could have booked in a bit earlier as the size of the pig is decided on numbers and we had to change this at the last minute and increase the amount of food. But we all enjoyed ourselves, particularly the group musicians.

100 Club Draw
Winners –Nanette Hall £50, Sheila Burrin £25 & Linda Ellis £15

Coffee Morning
Thank you we now have the rota filled until the end of September - start thinking about October please.

News from Bourg de Péage June 2010
The 12th étape (stage) of the 2010 Tour de France departed from BdP on 16 July, and the town was in a state of eager anticipation. Tens of thousands of spectators were expected. The riders departed at 11.55 am and there was a live broadcast from BdP on TV channel France 3 from 12.50 pm. Among the events leading up to the big day: a "human bicycle‟, composed of 600 volunteers, photographed from the air; a visit by a renowned cycling journalist; sculptures and frescoes at the departure point; and, in June, a cycling festival.

Other events to look forward to: music festivals on 27 and 28 August, including folk, world music, jazz, rock and soul. There will be a sculpture exhibition in October and an adaptation of the comedy Why not Stay for Breakfast? starring Delphine Depardieu (niece of Gérard) and Paul Belmondo (son of Jean-Paul) will be performed at the Salle Jean Cocteau in November.

Various building and renovation projects are under way, in the town centre, on the îlot de l‟Europe and on the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge).

A new Internet site is up and running at www.bourgdepeage.com. Various green spaces around the town are only be mown twice a year, to allow insects and wild plants to flourish and preserve biodiversity.

News from Mindelheim April 2010
Former mayor Erich Meier has been awarded the Gold Ring of Honour by the town, shortly after his 70th birthday. With him to celebrate the event were many local dignitaries and representatives from Mindelheim‟s twin towns. The present mayor, Dr Stephan Winter, paid warm tribute to Erich Meier‟s contribution to the town‟s development. The former mayor‟s good humour was evident throughout the evening, and he in his turn paid tribute to his colleagues and to his wife and children. The Town Development Office‟s first year has been a busy one. Local houseowners can come and get advice on how to improve their properties in a way which preserves and enlivens the appearance of the town and qualifies them for a grant. Empty residential and commercial properties pose a particular problem for the Office‟s manager, Claudia Kiechle, but steady progress is being made thanks to a scheme partly funded by the regional council.

Up to twelve people with mental health issues will be accommodated in a centre called “DiakoNische”. Work is still going on on the renovation of the property, and the local deaconry‟s social welfare programme requires 400,000 euros to complete it. Sponsors are still being sought for this important work.

A group of journalists from all over Germany has held a three-day conference in Mindelheim. The visitors were shown round the town, were presented to Georg von Frundsberg himself (aka Hemmes Weber), visited the town museum and were given a guided tour of the local Mindelheimer Zeitung office.
