Sant Feliu de Guixols – Spain
Sant Feliu de Guixols is a growing Mediterranean resort on the Costa Brava, of some 15,000 inhabitants. It lies 15 miles from Tossa del Mar and 16 miles from Lloret del Mar, and is approximately 70 miles from Barcelona. It is a very historic town with a lot of Mozarabic art to be seen. Although Roman remains are to be found Sant Feliu has its origins in a tenth century Benedictine monastery which has in recent years been reg and is now a museum and conference centre. In the twelth century the town, already possessing great shipbuilding yards, supported the Spanish raiding forces who conquered Mallorca. In 1571 eighty Sant Feliu ships’ captains helped Don John of Austria to chase the Turkish pirates out of the Western Mediterranean at the Battle of Lepanto.
With more than a thousand years of Mediterranean history behind it, Sant Feliu began modernisation. It is now strongly commercial and a tourist paradise. Originally a large area of cork production, circumstances have forced manufacturers to turn to the production of plastics and to promote tourism.
At first sight the town appears to be a typical coastal resort complete with harbour. However there are many places of interest both in the town and surrounding area. During the year there are many musical, sporting, film and folklore events. The typical Catalan dance, the Sardana, is performed several times a week along the promenade. The tree-lined sea front is most attractive with it bars and restaurants. Sant Feliu is a great sporting centre with several golf courses, horse racing, sailing swimming and underwater facilities.
